Our Story
The love for being one in the ocean, no worries about if your swimsuit will hold up, that is true freedom.
Where do I begin?
Of course there is my love for the ocean! Everything begins with that blue magical mama of ours, with all its personalities and moods rolled into one fluid force. It wasn’t until 2006 in the then a humble little town of Sayulita that I fell in love with surfing. At the time I was studying architecture in school, and those two passions of architecture and surfing, created the much needed balance in my life.
In the summer of 2011, a girlfriend introduced me to her amazing aunt who was a seamstress in the city. In front of us, she recreated a swimwear bottom by taking it apart and cutting it into new fabric and sowing it back all together. Wow, and just like that! The instant satisfaction of desire and the power of creation turned into a pair of tiny reversible bikini shorts in a matter of a few hours. I was hooked! I spent my entire saving that summer buying a discounted sowing machine and as much fabric as I could afford. And just like that, Lovera bikinis was born.
As I began experimenting with design, I took the little that I knew about creating fashion and added my own intrinsic knowledge of architectural design, symmetry, composition, and structure. I began looking at the women’s body not just as something to cloth, but as a piece of architecture that needed shape, aesthetics design and practical comfort. This way, I saw the beauty in all forms of the female body and fabrics became my chisel to eccentuate the shapes of all women. At the time, Loverabikinis was a beautiful little operation that I fit between Sayu and school. I used to carry fabric samples in a basket around the beach so anyone who wanted their own bikini could choose a pattern they liked. And viola, within a week they had their own custom suit that fit like a glove.
When my papa divorced I began driving the opposite way from Sayu, up the mountains, to a magical place called San Sebastian Del Oeste. It was here that my father introduced me to the our next door neighbors ENEDINA and CHUY, who were both seamstresses. With them on my team, I was able to multiply my creations and bring Loverabikinis to a new level. A year later when I set up my new workshop here in San Sebastian del Oeste, I met another magical woman, LUZ. Just like her name which means light in Spanish, Luz brought me clarity and security. As my right hand woman, she gifted the possibility for the project to continue to grow while I myself grew into motherhood. And soon three other seamstresses, JULIA, OLE and ANA, joined the project as I opened up Loverabikini’s first boutique in Sayulita in 2012.
Now in 2020, almost ten years after the birth of that initial inspiration which began in the ocean, Loverabikinis is still a relatively small operation between Sayulita and San Sebastian Del Oeste. And like all small businesses in the world, we have certainly been affected by the world pandemic. But just as when the brand first began, it is for women that Loverabikinis is born to support and it is women that have surrounded and continue to support the vision for this project. Over the past ten years, Loverabikinis has become a staple for job creation of women in rural areas here in the mountains of San Sebastian. At LOVERABIKINIS, we are a Mexican handmade, all women operated brand.
